The best time to travel to Venice is in the spring (April &May) or the fall (September & October). Walk through Piazza San Marco at sunrise to avoid the hoards of tourists or ride along the Grand Canal on an almost empty water-bus (Vaporetto). Sit open-air in the front or back and take in the sights.
In addition to Venice there are the Lagoon Islands to visit including Murano. Also, consider visiting Verona, Lake Garda and the Dolomites which are nearby.
